Monica Dart (b. 1971) is a Cape Town-based global photographer whose work explores people, places, and the quiet poetry of everyday life.

Monica Dart's journey as a photographer began in 2001 when she studied fine art photography in London. Since then, she has spent more than two decades capturing the world through her lens, building a distinctive documentary style that celebrates the beauty of everyday moments and human connection.

Based in Cape Town, Monica has travelled extensively across the globe, with her work taking her through Cuba, Japan, Italy, France, the Nordic region, New Zealand, and Australia. These journeys have deeply influenced her artistic vision, shaping her fascination with people, places, and the quiet poetry that exists in ordinary life—the moments that often go unnoticed by the rest of the world.

The Cuba On My Mind Series

One of Monica's most compelling bodies of work emerged from a spontaneous decision made in a Cape Town bookstore. With her eyes closed, she reached out and touched a random travel book from the shelf. The book was about Cuba. Intrigued by this moment of chance, she booked a flight to Havana just weeks later in June 2008.

What began as a spontaneous adventure became a profound creative exploration. Monica found herself captivated by Cuba's vibrant colour palette, the quality of light, the iconic vintage cars that line the streets, and the distinctive rhythm of daily life. The series Cuba On My Mind captures all of this—a visual love letter to a place that spoke to her artistic soul and continues to inspire her work.
