PUSSYFOOTING
pussyfoot – to move stealthily
This body of work explores the human tendency to avoid truth in uncomfortable situations - particularly where we are, in some way, complicit or quietly benefiting.
The works draw on Classified advertisements, loosely grouped under the heading “Entertainment,” from three of Cape Town’s daily newspapers. At the time, prostitution was illegal in South Africa. Yet these newspapers openly carried advertisements for sexual services while simultaneously publishing articles exposing illegality and moral failure within society and business.
In this contradiction, I found a powerful reflection of a broader human condition: the ease with which we condemn in public what we permit - or participate in - in private.
The advertisements themselves became both titles and, at times, physical elements within the works through collage, embedding this tension directly into the material of the pieces.
